Climate Change And Humanitarian Disasters

Anticipated climate changes will increase the call on the international community's humanitarian relief capacities:

  • Sea-level rise will force the evacuation of certain low-lying areas, even countries.
  • The intensification of tropical cyclones (including hurricanes) will result in increase storm damage and the kind of relief that Americans have experienced on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
  • The landmass of the Indian subcontinent is expected to warm, which scientists expect to heighten the impact of monsoon rains and associated flooding of low-lying areas such as Bangladesh.
  • It is very likely that there will be more frequent and intense drought and wildfire occurrences as a result of changing weather patterns and mid-continental drying.
  • Disease vectors will be altered in a warmer world, causing new worldwide health challenges.
All of these emerging humanitarian challenges will increase the call on U.S. and other military forces that play a key role in coordination, logistics and operations of humanitarian relief operations.
